Leaven…Not Heaven?

Matthew 16:11

King James Version (KJV)

11How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

Jesus had some great responses to His disciples but this is one of them that I really like. Jesus was referring to the traditions and ways of thinking and teaching that the Pharisees and Sadducees offered.

This is just like people today. We come out of church hearing what the Pastor has to say and then we format it to best fit our traditional way of thinking. Jesus did not operate out of the worldly sense but out the spiritual sense. Jesus did not want the Disciples to get caught up in the things that the Pharisees and Sadducees taught because it would lead them to be just like them. The Pharisees and Sadducees words were considered leaven.

Leaven is considered to be sourdough. Bread does not start out sour until you add certain acid bacterias and natural yeasts. Just like a Christian you don’t start out sour, you start out as a new creature whole and unblemished, until you get some traditional people to speak traditional things to you. You don’t get sour until someone grabs you and starts adding their ways. Once this happens, you begin to ferment and then next thing you know you are acting and talking just like those traditional Christians. The process then continues out of your mouth.

Reading your bible just to read is not enough. If we are to read our bible we need to do so with the mind of the Spirit of God. The Word of God can be read without spirit but it would just be like a book and that is not the case where the Word of God is concerned. Your Bible is a Spiritual book and it was meant to be Spiritually discerned. Your Bible is packed with seasoned words that can uplift you and teach you how to live. Your Bible is meant to bring you life and not death. Jesus spoke a good word to the Disciples that said, “The words I speak to you are spirit and they are life.” (John 6:63)

Jesus is wanting you to do the same thing. Read your Bible and study. He wants you to receive of the heavenly things. Receive Jesus’ words and expect a great change in your life. Remember spiritual things can only be discerned spiritually, not naturally. Be Blessed!
